The Hortus Malabaricus Botanical Garden is a plant conservation project started in 2015 by the SciGenom Research Foundation (SGRF), a non-profit trust established by Mr. Sam Santhosh in 2010. Inspired by the 17th-century botanical classic Hortus Malabaricus, the garden centres its efforts on preserving the 742 plant species originally chronicled in that historic text. The primary objectives of the Garden are the conservation, propagation, and research of plant species—not only those documented in the Hortus Malabaricus but also those native to the Western Ghats. Alongside it showcases the fascinating world of plants and their intricate connections with the surrounding fauna. The garden also seeks to reflect the deep reverence Indian culture has historically held for nature and plant life. The garden serves not only as a centre for learning about Kerala’s rich biodiversity but also as a serene environment where visitors can relax, connect with nature, and find joy among the plants.
Presently, the garden has dedicated sectors for Aquatic plants, Bamboos, Orchids, RET plants, and Xerophytes. The garden was renamed as Hortus Malabaricus Botanical Garden and Research Institute (HMBGRI) in 2025 with the aim of conducting research in various fields of plant science related to the Western Ghats flora and imparting this knowledge for the benefit and enlightenment of the public.
